The village of Zachary was devastated by a quickly spreading fire in 1903. The city center's Historic Zachary Village contains buildings that survived the fire or were built shortly afterward. Covering several blocks, the district is highlighted by the bright-yellow railroad depot and an old town hall with an adjacent firehouse. It has three primary dwellings — the Farm House, Miss Sis' Magic House, and the Victorian McHugh House — and several other historic buildings. The area retains the rustic charm of a small-town neighborhood from the 19th century. Cultural artifacts, folklore, and guided tours cement the historic experience.
