Zachary's roots go back to a 160-acre farm owned by Darel Zachary. He sold his land in the 1880s to the Illinois Central Railroad, which added a track and a depot. This sparked development around the depot, and the village that was formed was named Zachary after the original farmer. The city was incorporated on Aug. 2, 1889.
Zachary was devastated by fire in 1903. The city center's Historic Village contains buildings that survived the fire or were built shortly afterward. The most notable is the depot, which residents worked to save while their own houses burned. They knew that the city needed the depot to survive and rebuild.
