Originally known as Powell's Valley, Gresham was first settled in 1851 by two brothers, Jackson and James Powell. By the 1880s, the area was bustling with pioneer families and farmers. A local merchant petitioned for a post office in 1884 and named it after Walter Q. Gresham, the Postmaster General at the time. This move solidified the name and identity of the area. Gresham officially became a city in 1905, the same year as the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, and had a population of only 365 people. The first mayor, Lewis Shattuck, came from one of the pioneering families. Early on, the economy revolved around agriculture, with residents growing berries, grapes, and vegetables. A train service that ran hourly between Gresham and Portland allowed easy access for both trade and travel, helping the community grow. As settlers expanded, they established nearby towns such as Boring, Sandy, Fairview, and Estacada. A significant milestone in Gresham's history came with the founding of its library in 1913, thanks to a grant from the Andrew Carnegie Library Fund. What started as a small collection of books in a general store grew into the Gresham Branch Public Library, serving as a hub of learning and culture. In 1959, the first hospital, Gresham General Hospital, opened downtown. It later moved and became the Mount Hood Medical Center in 1984, solidifying Gresham's place as a modern, growing city. Came for a Just Rum event in Sandy, Oregon!
We like it there as we lived there for a year. Always something to do and see. Nature or the mall!
Soothing indoor pool and hot tub made it fun for my whole family. Really clean and well maintained. Pets allowed. All floors are well secured. Need a key card to use elevator or staircase. Nice breakfast in the bistro for my family. Overall we loved the experience!
Facility where my son practiced baseball for Mt. Hood's select team was nice.
