Originally known as Powell's Valley, Gresham was first settled in 1851 by two brothers, Jackson and James Powell. By the 1880s, the area was bustling with pioneer families and farmers. A local merchant petitioned for a post office in 1884 and named it after Walter Q. Gresham, the Postmaster General at the time. This move solidified the name and identity of the area. Gresham officially became a city in 1905, the same year as the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, and had a population of only 365 people.
