Pendleton is tucked away in Umatilla County, Oregon. Despite its relatively small population of only over 17,000 residents, it is packed with a wealth of attractions and sights that make it a fantastic destination for travelers. This city, which serves as the county seat, is brimming with history, culture, and a touch of the Wild West that appeals to a broad range of visitors. Transportation here is well-supported by major highways, including Interstate 84, US Route 30, and US Route 395. The Union Pacific Railroad also serves the city, which has connected Pendleton to major cities since the 1880s. For air travel, the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport, located just outside, offers daily flights to Portland, ensuring convenient access to broader destinations. Pendleton is just 3 hours from Portland and Boise and about 4.5 hours from Seattle, making it a great stop on your travel route through the Pacific Northwest. Pendleton is best known for the Pendleton Round-Up, a renowned rodeo held every September. This event offers a taste of the Wild West with parades, concerts, and traditional Native American performances. The Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is another highlight, providing insights into the history and culture of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla tribes. Cultural attractions in Pendleton include the Pendleton Center for the Arts, housed in the old Carnegie Library building, and the Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts. These venues provide a platform for local and regional artists to showcase their work, granting visitors a deep dive into the area's artistic heritage. The Heritage Station Museum is another key site in the historic 1909 Pendleton Train Depot. The museum features exhibits on regional and local history, as well as preserved historical structures like a one-room schoolhouse and a family cabin, providing a comprehensive overview of Pendleton's past. For those who appreciate the great outdoors, Pendleton also boasts several natural attractions. The Umatilla National Forest, a short drive away, offers a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping amidst stunning landscapes. Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area is another must-visit, featuring a beautiful setting for picnicking and learning about the Oregon Trail. These natural sites complement Pendleton's cultural offerings, making it an ideal destination for those looking to experience both art and nature. Of course, a key consideration for any visitor is accommodation, and the Pendleton area offers plenty of options. From cozy inns and motels for those looking for budget-friendly choices to more luxurious hotels and suites for travelers seeking a bit of indulgence, you're sure to find something to suit your needs. These properties are known for their warm hospitality and top-notch services, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable rest. More from this guide...

Pendleton, OR: A Historic Hub of Eastern Oregon

Pendleton is rich in history and culture, located in the rolling hills of Eastern Oregon. Established as a commercial center in 1851, it began when William C. McKay set up a trading post at the mouth of McKay Creek. Over time, it grew into an important town. This place was named after George H. Pendleton, a US Representative and Senator from Ohio when the post office was established in 1865. The city was officially incorporated on October 25, 1880, by the Oregon Legislative Assembly. Pendleton is known as the cultural heart of Eastern Oregon. Its historic downtown area is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its rich architectural heritage. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) have their land nearby and have significantly influenced the local culture and economy. The CTUIR operates the Wildhorse Resort & Casino and a golf course, which provides revenue for the tribe and enhances the region's appeal as a tourist destination. The Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, established by the CTUIR, offers visitors a deep dive into the history of the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla tribes. The local economy has long been tied to the wool industry, particularly through the Pendleton Woolen Mills. Founded by the Bishop brothers in 1909, the company built on the region's earlier businesses related to sheep ranching. The mill initially produced wool blankets and robes, which became famous for their vivid colors and intricate patterns. Today, Pendleton Woolen Mills continues to produce high-quality wool goods, maintaining the city's reputation as a center for this traditional craft. With its cultural events, historical sites, and outdoor activities, Pendleton, OR, is a worthwhile addition to any travel plan. Whether you're interested in history, adventure, or simply soaking in the local charm, Pendleton has something to offer.

"Good Hotel & Location"
Score 5.0 / 5

The employees working at Eastern Oregon Regional Airport were very kind and helpful. There is a good variety of hotels and local eateries and some lovely vistas to observe while traveling through and around the Pendleton area though after my visit to Oxford Suites I could not imagine staying anywhere else! A historian or simply a curious tourist would be well served by dialoguing with locals to pick up some of the rich history of that region of the state, most of whom during my visit were friendly people accustomed to encountering distant travelers and willing to give pointers and background provided the questioner possesses a dose of common courtesy. Overall, a good location for its sights, local culture and history, and somewhat scattered but quality establishments.

Score 4.0 / 5

Pendleton is a quaint little town. We did lots of shopping and the Rainbow Restaurant is a legend. Wish the rodeo was going on when we were there...heard a lot about that. Thank you for the destination experience. We will refer our friends and family.
