Pendleton, OR: A Historic Hub of Eastern Oregon
Pendleton is rich in history and culture, located in the rolling hills of Eastern Oregon. Established as a commercial center in 1851, it began when William C. McKay set up a trading post at the mouth of McKay Creek. Over time, it grew into an important town. This place was named after George H. Pendleton, a US Representative and Senator from Ohio when the post office was established in 1865. The city was officially incorporated on October 25, 1880, by the Oregon Legislative Assembly.
Pendleton is known as the cultural heart of Eastern Oregon. Its historic downtown area is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving its rich architectural heritage. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) have their land nearby and have significantly influenced the local culture and economy. The CTUIR operates the Wildhorse Resort & Casino and a golf course, which provides revenue for the tribe and enhances the region's appeal as a tourist destination. The Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, established by the CTUIR, offers visitors a deep dive into the history of the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla tribes.
The local economy has long been tied to the wool industry, particularly through the Pendleton Woolen Mills. Founded by the Bishop brothers in 1909, the company built on the region's earlier businesses related to sheep ranching. The mill initially produced wool blankets and robes, which became famous for their vivid colors and intricate patterns. Today, Pendleton Woolen Mills continues to produce high-quality wool goods, maintaining the city's reputation as a center for this traditional craft.
With its cultural events, historical sites, and outdoor activities, Pendleton, OR, is a worthwhile addition to any travel plan. Whether you're interested in history, adventure, or simply soaking in the local charm, Pendleton has something to offer.

The employees working at Eastern Oregon Regional Airport were very kind and helpful. There is a good variety of hotels and local eateries and some lovely vistas to observe while traveling through and around the Pendleton area though after my visit to Oxford Suites I could not imagine staying anywhere else! A historian or simply a curious tourist would be well served by dialoguing with locals to pick up some of the rich history of that region of the state, most of whom during my visit were friendly people accustomed to encountering distant travelers and willing to give pointers and background provided the questioner possesses a dose of common courtesy. Overall, a good location for its sights, local culture and history, and somewhat scattered but quality establishments.
