Situated about 16 miles northeast of Montgomery, Wetumpka is the seat of Elmore County. The area around the city has a rich history that goes all the way back to the early 18th century. In 1714, a French colonist by the name of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville directed the establishment of Fort Toulouse near the confluence of the Coosa River and the Tallapoosa River. The French settlers traded at Wetumpka until 1763, when the British took control of the territory after winning the Seven Years' War.
Following Britain's defeat in the American Revolutionary War, Wetumpka became a part of the Mississippi Territory. The early 19th century saw the arrival of American pioneers, many of whom brought along enslaved African-American laborers. The fertile land in the area attracted settlers from Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, which resulted in an agricultural boom. Wetumpka was incorporated as a city in 1834. It began to flourish as a cotton boom town throughout the Antebellum era, but it fell into decline in the latter half of the 19th century because of the Civil War and a devastating flood.
Today, Wetumpka has a population of about 8,200 and covers an area of 11.3 square miles. The city attracts many tourists as it provides easy access to Montgomery and some of the top attractions in southern Alabama. It's known as “The City of Natural Beauty” because it's home to stunning landmarks such as the Wetumpka Impact Crater and Jasmine Hill Gardens & Outdoor Museum.
