For many years, Native Americans lived in the area of Louisiana that is now known as Westwego. These groups created shell middens, areas where debris from consuming shellfish and other animals has accumulated and remained over time. Some of the shell middens are still visible in the area today. In 1719, the French Minister of State LeBlanc was one of the first Europeans to develop the area when he started a port on the river and a plantation. This plantation later became a planting ground for sugar.
