A grant program encouraged people to settle in the area, and many of those who settled here were fur trappers and traders. Later, people from the South moved to Ellis County. In December 1849, a bill officially established Ellis County as part of the Republic of Texas. More than three decades later, the name was changed to Midlothian after the county in historic Scotland. A Scottish train engineer who moved to the area said that the area reminded him of his homeland, and the local population agreed on the name change.
