The Pennacook people originally inhabited the area now called Leominster. The nearby Nashua River made the soil fertile for growing corn, squash, beans, and tobacco. This rich soil helped attract European settlers, too, who began arriving in the mid-17th century. Leominster was founded as part of Lancaster in 1653. It was recognized as a town in its own right in 1740.
Near the start of the 19th century, Leominster's economy began to shift from agriculture to manufacturing. By the 1850s, Leominster was home to piano makers, paper mills, and comb manufacturers.
Today, many of Leominster's former factories are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors love Leominster's exciting shopping opportunities, beautiful parklands, friendly restaurants, and more.
