Located near the Platte River, it is a great location to enjoy fresh air and water activities like boating, tubing, swimming, and fishing.
If you travel just 15 minutes to the south, you'll be met with Schramm Park State Recreational Area. It is a destination popular with runners, hikers, and bikers. There's also an Educational Center in the park; it'll help you learn about Nebraska's aquatic and terrestrial life with its interactive exhibits. Lastly, you'll be able to enjoy a peaceful family gathering at one of the picnic shelters or have a blast with your kids at the playground nearby.
There are a couple of other points of interest near Schramm Park. One of such is the Eugene T. Mahoney State Park. This modern park offers year-round lodging with its Peter Kiewit Lodge and several secluded cabins. Other recreational opportunities out here include a family aquatic center with a wave pool and waterslides, 690 acres of hiking, biking, and horseback riding along the bank of the Platte River. Enjoy tennis, miniature golf, basketball, and softball with your group of friends, or just take in the inspiring scenery from the 70-foot observation tower.
And when you're done with the outdoor adventures for the day, attend the Denman and Mary Mallory Kountze Theater for some cultural experience.
Another place surely worth visiting is Gretna's Strategic Air and Space Museum. It opened in 1959 to commemorate the Strategic Air Command. Today it is a unique 300,000 square feet facility with various interactive exhibits, two aircraft display hangars, and educational and event spaces that holds the story of American aircraft and aerospace industries from the period of Cold War and beyond.
Definitely make time to visit the Holy Family Shrine. It is an architectural and spiritual marvel created initially for travelers to pray and discover the Catholic Faith. It is a stunning structure combining wood, glass, and stone elements in its composition. Its design has an unusual aspect connecting the chapel's exterior and its hall. The stream cuts through the chapel floor and splits along two aisles. It runs the whole length of the room and flows into a pool beneath the altar. This place is an unforgettable spiritual experience, full of peculiar detail and care.
