In Brookshire, you still get a flavor of the Old West deep in the heart of Texas with a small town deeply tied to agriculture and ranching. The city was named after Nathan Brookshire, a prominent landowner in the early 19th century and a captain in the Texian Army.
Today, the booming town has access to neighboring communities like Katy and Houston via Interstate 10. Brookshire is growing steadily (at a 36 percent rate as of the 2010 U.S. census) and continues to welcome new industries and residents to the area. Igloo Industries has a factory in the area, and Rooms To Go and Goya Foods Texas also have facilities located nearby.
For a town of just about 5,000 residents, Brookshire offers plenty of surprises to delight all of your senses. Check out the Hemi Hideaway, for instance. This by-appointment-only muscle car hideout is a treasure house of neon signs dating back to the early 1910s. For a $5 cash admission fee, the owner will give you a personal tour of the muscle cars and thousands of working neon signs. The tour closes with a scoop of ice cream, on the house.
For a feel-good shopping experience, pop into Brookwood, a local facility that employs and supports individuals with special needs. Those looking for some authentic Cajun cuisine should check out Repka's, which is renowned for its crawfish. If you'd like to try some country line dancing, pop into Buller Road club for a beer and some country music.
They say everything is bigger in Texas, and when it comes to local roadside convenience store Buc-ee's, the saying absolutely holds true. Come for the fresh-made jerky, homemade fudge, or a T-shirt emblazoned with the iconic beaver mascot or a souvenir featuring the Texas state flag.
Families love to head to Brookshire for a day at Dewberry Farm, where kids can pet the animals, pick out a pumpkin or a Christmas tree, ride train, carousel, or even ponies, and check out the unique play structures made of old farm equipment. On a hot Texas summer day, take the kids over to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park to check out the water slide. You can also scope out the local playgrounds like Brookshire City Park, a favorite spot for parents for its modern, well-kept playground equipment and its shelter area with rocking chairs and picnic tables.
