Like a lot of little towns in America, Batesville started from a big dream. In 1837 Teunis Amack bought a 120-acre piece of land in what used to be known as Ripley County's Laughery Township. He built his home there, and also dug a well. In 1852 Amack sold his house to the John Callahan Trust Company. And just like that, the original downtown of Batesville was laid out, and a railroad was built. Joshua Bates was the first one to build a house on one of the lots, so it is believed that the town was named after him.
As the area was rich with hardwood timber it quickly became home to many factories. Coffin and furniture productions became prominent between 1867 and 1892. However, after the forest became significantly cleared farming came into the picture and remains the central occupation for the area today.
Batesville was built by a very forward-looking community and in the blink of an eye became a commercially thriving town. It was also one of the first cities to light up its downtown with electrical street lights.
Batesville is small but mighty. Its community is proud, hard-working, and forward-looking. You'll be surprised by all the amenities this town has to offer. Public and private school systems, a variety of businesses, top-notch healthcare - everything goes above and beyond what you'd expect from a rural town.
Best times to be in Batesville
Summers are pretty muggy in Batesville, so it's better to come from early May to June when the temperature just starts to warm up.
Another great period is from mid-August to early October. During these days make sure to stop by Liberty Park - the main public park of the town. It is a very well-kept public space with a number of quality amenities to enjoy: tennis and basketball courts, a baseball field, an ADA-equipped playground. Rent one of the six shelters, pavilion, or a gazebo for any event you have in mind. Liberty Park will become a highlight of your day.
