Coventry was founded in 1741, after several farming families petitioned the General Assembly of Rhode Island to recognize their community as a town in its own right, rather than part of Warwick. Many of the structures from this time, including the Waterman Tavern and the homesteads of early settlers Thomas Paine and decorated Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, are still standing today. They named their new home Coventry, after the English city of the same name.
Coventry embraced the Industrial Revolution and became home to several mills and manufacturing plants in the 19th century. These new businesses brought substantial numbers of Irish and French-Canadian immigrants to Coventry. By the end of the 19th century, nearly a quarter of Coventry's residents were born outside the United States.
While Coventry is proud of its past, it's also a forward-thinking town. Two main commercial areas of Route 3 and the Centre of New England are hives of activity, with the facilities locals and tourists need. However, initiatives limit residential development in Coventry's west to maintain its rural feel.
When is the best time of year to visit Coventry, RI?
Fall is arguably the best time for visiting Coventry. The town isn't as busy as it is during summer, when tourists take advantage of the warm weather and extended school vacation. With fewer visitors in town, you'll pay less for your accommodation. However, you'll still enjoy great weather, with average daily tops in the 60s. George B. Parker Woodland also looks its best with the leaves changing to red and gold.
Daytime temperatures in summer range from the low 70s to low 80s, perfect for swimming at Briar Point Beach. However, the tourist rush means you'll pay extra for that summer getaway.
Spring is a little cooler than fall, especially during the start of the season. It's also Coventry's wettest season, with most of the town's yearly rain falling during March and April. You might get a great price on a spring getaway, but you should check the forecast before setting off.
Only the bravest travelers visit Coventry during winter. The season is bitterly cold, with average daily highs in the mid-30s to mid-40s.
