Home of Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Kentucky, is the third-largest city in the Bluegrass region after Louisville and Lexington. It serves as the county seat for Madison County and a hub for work and shopping in south-central Kentucky.
Richmond was founded in 1798 by Virginian Col. John Miller. According to legend, Miller was attracted to the area because of the friendly Native Americans and the tasty spring water. On July 4, 1798, the state moved the county seat to land owned by Miller, and the new town was given the name Richmond after his birthplace in Virginia. The town was officially incorporated in 1809. In 1862, the Union and Confederate armies fought in the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, during the Civil War.
Today, Richmond has preserved much of its history, as many sites within the city are on the National Register of Historic Places. Richmond has become a vibrant tourist attraction with incredible dining options, unique shopping experiences, exciting nightlife, and comfortable accommodations. Whatever your reasons for visiting, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this historic city has to offer.
When should you visit Richmond, KY?
The best time to visit Richmond is in the shoulder seasons when you can find great hotel rates and still enjoy the beautiful weather.
Spring highs range from 66 to 75 degrees, with lows dipping into the low-40s. As long as you pack a few layers and expect rain showers, you'll love visiting Richmond in April or May. Keep in mind, however, that spring is Kentucky's second-busiest tourist season. You won't deal with as many crowds as you would during the summer, but you still might want to book your hotel reservation a few weeks early.
Tourism is slow during the fall season due to the weather, but there's plenty to experience as temperatures start to cool off. Average highs fluctuate between 57 and 79 degrees, depending on what month you visit. You can also enjoy a number of fall festivals occurring in and around Richmond this time of year.
Summer is peak tourist season in Richmond for good reason. Kentucky experiences comfortably warm weather and moderate precipitation during the summer. High temperatures rarely hit 90 degrees, so you can enjoy all the outdoor attractions without overheating. Just remember that hotel rates are priced highest during the summer months. Making a reservation well in advance could help you save.
Winters in Richmond are cold enough to keep the tourist crowds away. Since so many of Richmond's attractions are outdoor historical sites, you may have difficulty checking those landmarks off your list. Still, Richmond winters aren't as cold as some parts of the country, with average lows hitting 23 degrees in January. If you come prepared with cozy outerwear and break up your trip with indoor attractions, you could enjoy a memorable, budget-friendly vacation.
