South Boston's location in the heart of the southeastern U.S. gives it the typical southern climate of hot and muggy in the summer and cold with a little snow in the winter. The best time of year to visit is the middle of May to late June and mid-August to early October. The high temperatures get almost unbearable between these two periods and you'll be hard-pressed to find relief from the heat.
The hottest time of the year begins at the end of May and lasts until the middle of September. Average daily highs reach 88 degrees and average lows are around 70. The heat starts to lessen going into October but doesn't moderate until the end of October. Highs hover around 50 degrees during the winter and stay there until the end of January. The needle on the thermometer starts to rise heading into February and keeps going up. It's not unusual to see highs of 80 degrees and lows of 60 in May.
Rain is the most common form of precipitation with an average daily chance of rain falling at 31% between the beginning of May to the end of August. The percentage drops to 19% between the beginning of September and the end of April. While the area is no stranger to freezing temperatures, snow is almost unheard of.

Hudson Heritage Farms is a small farm that focuses on raising heritage breeds of farm animals and uses a farm-to-table approach in its operations. They raise breeds such as Highland cattle, Dorset sheep, Boer goats, and large black swine. Rare breeds of chicken are also raised on the farm to create a colorful flock. The farm owners are proud of their achievements with raising rare animals that were once found on area farms but fell out of fashion. They show visitors around the farm, explain their interest in raising rare breeds, and explain how they care for their livestock. It's a great place to bring the family and give them a first-hand experience with a working farm.
The South Boston - Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History features exhibits of what life was like in the area before modern conveniences for both natives and settlers. You'll find displays of Native American artifacts, exhibits that include a country store and pioneer medicine layouts, and even a war room that displays objects related to all of the wars that people from Virginia were involved in. Outside the museum is the Norfolk and Western train caboose number 518563, a perfectly preserved train car that was put into service in 1970. When the trail line was closed for good, the railway gifted the caboose to the town of South Boston. The caboose eventually found its way to the museum where it was restored and put on exhibit.
