Before the American Revolution, the area now known as Suffern was referred to as “Sidman's Clove” or “The Point of the Mountains.” It lies along the Washington-Rochambeau National Historic Trail, managed by the National Park Service. The trail commemorates Gen. George Washington's route as he traveled with French Comte de Rochambeau to the Yorktown siege, an event that lead to the end of the Revolutionary War. The village itself was established in 1796 and named after John Suffern, Rockland County's first judge.
Today, Suffern is considered a gateway to the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. The village features a number of historical markers, including Suffern's tavern site, grammar school, Sacred Heart Parish, and depot. You'll also find the Soldier's Monument, also known as the Washington Avenue Monument.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Suffern, you want to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this beautiful village has to offer.
When should you travel to Suffern, NY?
The best time to visit Suffern is from May through the end of September. Despite the tourist crowds, summer in Suffern offers unbeatable weather with highs ranging from 71 to 84 degrees. Evening lows can still feel a bit chilly in May, so you may want to bring a light jacket when venturing out after sunset.
Summer is also the ideal season for exploring the Hudson River Valley's points of interest. With kids in school and fewer families booking their vacations, you'll be able to explore Suffern's outdoor attractions. Suffern weather warms up slowly in the spring, so expect highs around 60 degrees Fahrenheit in April. Fall is slightly warmer, reaching 75 degrees in September and 64 degrees in October.
As with any community in New York State, Suffern experiences cold winters that often blanket the village in pristine snow.
