Located at the mouth of the San Jacinto River in Galveston Bay, Baytown is a scenic paradise full of marshes, swamps, prairies, and beaches. The first settlers arrived in Baytown in 1822, and within 30 years, it became a boom town for the oil industry. The city was also ground zero of many pivotal battles, including the Battle of San Jacinto, which was the decisive victory in the Texas Revolution. Today, the city's economic growth is almost entirely dependent on oil drilling and oil refining, although the downtown is vibrant and has a plethora of activities throughout the year for residents and visitors alike.
Whether you're in Baytown for work or for vacation, you need to find the right hotel to fit your needs and heighten your overall experience.
When to Visit Baytown, TX
Due to Baytown's location on the Gulf of Mexico, it has a humid, subtropical climate. If you visit in the summer, make sure to pack shorts, T-shirts, and a ton of sunscreen. Temperatures average 90 degrees from June to August, although its setting on the Gulf makes it milder and less humid than inland cities such as Houston. If you're looking to beat the heat, Baytown offers numerous beaches to cool yourself off, as well as the Pirate's Bay Waterpark, which is a local favorite. Hotels fill somewhat fast during this time, making hotel bookings essential.
In the spring, temperatures cool considerably, making it the perfect time of year to get outdoors. This season is the ideal time to hop in a kayak and explore Galveston Bay. When you're in the water, you'll enjoy the exercise, the scenery, bird watching, and the Fred Hartman Bridge, which at 2.6 miles is the largest cable-stay bridge in the state. Tourism falls somewhat during this season, so you may have the opportunity to get a bargain on the room of your choice.
The fall ushers in a lull from the oppressive heat with highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid-60s, although tropical storms and hurricanes aren't entirely uncommon. However, most of the season features wonderful temperatures, and the Baytown Nature Center becomes one of the most heavily visited attractions, featuring local wildlife as well as birds stopping here for the winter. You can also catch the end of the hot rod racing season at the Royal Purple Raceway, which seats up to 40,000, fanatical racing enthusiasts. If there's a big race at the end of the season, you may want to book your hotel early, as your top choices may dwindle the closer you get to your visit.
The winter is the non-peak season in Baytown as the weather hovers between 42 degrees and 61 degrees. However, these temperatures are a welcome break from the rest of the year, and precipitation is almost non-existent. During this time, golf, hiking, and other outdoor activities become popular. However, hotel demand is still down in comparison to other times of the year.
