Located about 34 miles north of Orlando, DeLand is the seat of Volusia County. The area around the city has a long history that goes all the way back to 1874, when Captain John Rich built a log cabin there. In 1876, a baking soda magnate called Henry Addison DeLand visited the area and envisioned establishing an agricultural and tourism center there. In the same year, he founded the town and named it after himself.
In 1883, DeLand constructed DeLand Academy, the first private college in Florida. When he returned to his home in New York after a freeze destroyed his orange crop, he entrusted the academy to a hat manufacturer called John B. Stetson. In 1889, the institution was renamed John B. Stetson University. DeLand was incorporated as a city in 1882 and became the seat of Volusia County five years later. It was the first community in Florida to have access to electricity.
DeLand experienced a land boom in the 1920s. Many buildings with Mediterranean Revival architecture were constructed during this time, earning the city the nickname “The Athens of Florida.” Some of the buildings have been restored over the years, including the famous Athens Theatre.
Today, DeLand has a population of about 33,500 residents and a total land area of 17.8 square miles. Its historic districts and popular festivals make it one of the most visited cities in Northeast Florida.
