Rockford was first inhabited by a few Native American tribes, including the Ottawa tribe. The oldest and only evidence of them is from early surveyors, who noted their trails throughout the area. Early settlers, such as Alexander Palmer, came to the area that is now known as Rockford back in 1843. These early settlers came together to build a sawmill and a damn by the Rogue River, and a community began to appear.
During that time, a lot of land was bought by a man named Smith Lapham, who had helped build the sawmill and dam projects. After construction was completed and some of the earlier founders had left the town to find new projects, Lapham stayed and the settlement was consequently named Laphamville after him.
The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Company began constructing railroad tracks through the community. They advised Laphamville residents to pick a shorter name for the town. A new visitor suggested Rockford, after the rocky ford situated below the dam. It was renamed officially in 1865 and incorporated as the Village of Rockford in 1866, boasting 315 residents at the time. The rest is history!
