During the late 1700s and early 1800s the area was settled by Quakers who came to Canada from America to get away from the violence of the American Revolution. The area now called Newmarket made for a great home, since it is located on the Holland River. The river was dammed and used as a mill, and the town of Newmarket grew and thrived. In 1857 the population was 700 people, but by 1880 it had grown to about 2,000 people.
Today, Newmarket's economy thrives on knowledge-based industries and business services. There is also a large market for manufacturing and retail. Sports and recreational activities are popular throughout the city, and you can find a variety of sports clubs in Newmarket, including the Newmarket Soccer Club, the Newmarket Hurricanes – a hockey team, and the York Curling Club.
