Be sure to visit Cullinan Park in nearby Sugar Land, too, for birdwatching, fishing, hiking, or communing with nature over a picnic spread. One of the largest parks in the Houston area, it covers 750 acres of waterways, woodlands, and prairie land. White Lake and Pumpkin Lake are both within the park, which boasts a wide variety of flora and fauna.
If you love to shop, you'll want to visit Fountains on the Lake, a large shopping area in the heart of Stafford that covers more than 600,000 square feet. This shopping district boasts big names such as Old Navy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Applebee's, as well as other prime restaurant options.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Stafford, the first traditional Hindu Mandir of its kind in North America, is peaceful but is also robust with social, cultural, and spiritual activities. The stunning structure was finished in July 2004. It is composed of Turkish limestone on the exterior and Italian marble in the interior. Over 33,000 pieces were hand-carved in India and shipped to the United States to be assembled in Stafford. Followers of Hinduism go to the mandir to pray and worship. Visitors are welcome to view an exhibition on Hinduism and can stop at the Souvenir Shop.
Even with Houston a short drive away, visitors who like their vacations a little quieter might wish to spend most of their time in a smaller city such as Stafford. With First Colony Mall just on the other side of the freeway, there are plenty of great places to eat.
