In response to a call from Brigham Young to set up a Cotton Mission in Southern Utah, a group of Mormon pioneers settled in Springdale in 1862. Local lore claims the name came from one of the settler's wives. He built a house near a large spring, and when he asked her to name it, she called it Springdale.
