The history of Solon begins in 1820 when the first settlers, hailing from Connecticut, made their home in what was then part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The location was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, the son of one of the earliest settlers. The township's moniker reflects an admiration for the ancient Athenian lawmaker Solon, considered the "father of democracy." These early pioneers faced the typical settlement challenges, with the added difficulty of draining the wetlands to make the land suitable for agriculture. Their efforts paid off as Solon Township flourished into a fertile farming region known for its corn and wheat, as well as dairy production. The introduction of the railroad, particularly the Cleveland-Youngstown section of the Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad in 1857, played a significant role in the area's growth. Traditional New England designs inspired the town's layout, which features a central public square. This square became part of a vital north–south corridor that connected Solon with other townships and was named SOM Center Road, now known as Ohio 91. Solon's transformation from a township to an urban community began with its incorporation as a village in 1927 and its eventual status as a city in 1961. The city's thoughtful planning and zoning strategies have supported a strong industrial sector while preserving the quality of life in residential neighborhoods. Commercial and retail districts are centralized, providing convenience for all residents. The city also boasts expansive parklands and recreational facilities, including parts of the Cleveland Metroparks and several golf courses. In 1991, the completion of US 422, a divided highway, enhanced connectivity within Northeast Ohio, reinforcing Solon's position as a well-planned city that balances industrial, residential, and recreational spaces.
