The best time to visit Riverhead is in summer when the weather is sunny and warm and you can enjoy the local beaches. However, hotel rates are also higher in summer, and rooms are harder to find. You should make your reservations as soon as possible to get the best rooms for the lowest prices. There are lots of fun events in summer, like the Polish Town Street Fair on the third weekend in August. It celebrates the contributions of the large number of Polish immigrants to the area with American and Polish music, a Polish dance festival, arts and crafts, Polish food, Polish imports, and more.
For better deals on hotels, you can see Riverhead in late spring or early fall. The weather is still nice, but prices are lower. In early September, visit the Hallockville Fall Festival and Craft Show for an old-fashioned country fair. Over 50 artisans and vendors sell local, homemade jewelry, woodcrafts, art, jams and jellies, baked goods, clothing, candles, and more. There's also a tractor pull, a model railroad, a vegetable expo, live music, and children's activities. You can also go on a guided tour of the 1765 Homestead, the 1931 Cichanowicz Farmhouse, and the Homestead Barn. The Hallockville Museum Farm is a Riverhead Town Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Riverhead is a bit more commercial than North Fork, but that allows last minute reservations at various bars/restaurants for larger groups, as well as out of town guests who are in different time zones to find food at odd hours. It also has tons of shopping and easy access to North Fork vineyards.
We liked the vineyards at Aquebogue and the Tanger Outlets.
We were visiting and staying in the city for a wedding. The city looks great and promising, and we will definitely return to see more attractions.
