Queensbury's earliest settlers were encouraged by the 1762 Queensbury Patent, which attracted Quakers to the township. The town was officially established as Queensbury in 1786, although it lost territory in both 1792 and 1810 to form adjacent towns. Glens Falls annexed about 49 acres of land in 2003 with the town's permission, further reducing its size.
From 1965 to 1998, Queensbury was home to the Lake George Opera Festival, at which time the high school's auditorium produced as many as seven plays per year. Two Queensbury buildings—the Sanford House and Asa Stower House—are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Queensbury serves as the perfect home base for exploring the Adirondack Mountains, Green Mountain and Finger Lakes National Forests, and various other wilderness areas.
Whatever your reason for visiting Queensbury, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this beautiful region has to offer.
When should you visit Queensbury, NY?
The best time to visit Queensbury is in the summer from May to August. The weather is warm this time of year and area attractions offer extended hours. Keep in mind, however, that the Adirondack region tends to get crowded in the summer, so you'll want to book your room well in advance. High temperatures range from 71 to 83 degrees, but lows can feel quite chilly, especially during May. Pack light layers even in during the summer months just to be safe.
If you're traveling to New York for the winter sports season, make your reservations from November to April. Despite single-digit temperatures, tourists flock to the area for skiing, tubing, hunting, ice skating, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Certain attractions will be closed for the season, but you'll still find plenty to do no matter when you visit.
Travelers who prefer to take advantage of discounted hotel rates and fewer tourists should plan a trip during September or October. Winter recreations haven't yet kicked in, but school-aged children are back in school, which reduces the number of families who visit. Best of all, the annual Adirondack Balloon Festival, which has been going strong since 1972, takes place in late September. You'll want to book a hotel several weeks in advance, however, since the festival draws in a bigger crowd than average for the shoulder season.
