The area that would become Navarre was first scouted in 1693 by Spanish explorers. An official settlement arose in 1884 which residents dubbed “Eagan” after its first postmaster, John Eagan. This early settlement consisted of about 40 families and, despite the post office shutting down in 1884, people continued to move into the community. By the 1890s, Eagan officially appeared on area maps, attracting even more residents.
Navarre as we know it today was founded by U.S. army colonel Guy Wyman after he purchased a large amount of land in Eagan. His wife called their property “Navarre” after the Spanish province. Wyman mapped out the town in 1925 but didn't proceed with development. He was forced to sell off portions of his land during the Great Depression. The community as a whole would eventually become known as Navarre.
Today, Navarre is largely a commuter town for defense contractors, federal civil servants, and U.S. military personnel due to its proximity to Pensacola, but it has grown in recent years to become a scenic destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts. Whatever your reason for traveling to Navarre, we'll help you find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything the Florida Panhandle has to offer.
