In its early days, members of the Lenape Navesink tribe lived in the area now known as Middletown. Henry Hudson, an explorer and sea captain, was searching for the Northwest Passage and anchored his ship on the shores of Sandy Hook Bay in the early 17th century. More than 50 years later, Thomas Whitlock settled in the area before the Second Anglo-Dutch War began. Baptist and Quaker settlers later arrived from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York, and settled in the townships of Shrewsbury and Middletown. The New Jersey Legislature incorporated Middletown under the Township Act of 1978.
