Maple Shade really became an established community in 1811, when they started construction on the Little Red Schoolhouse — a cute single-room schoolhouse, still located on Main St. today. The Little Red Schoolhouse was in use for 97 years, closing its doors in 1909. Outside of the schoolhouse, the town had a sawmill, blacksmith shop, and wagon works. The blacksmith shop served the community from 1847-1939, when the shop was lost in a fire.
The railroad came to town in 1864 and started to operate in 1867. This is when the small township began to get its identity. Having access to the railroad made the small town a place more people could live and take the train into work. As more people moved to the area, Maple Shade began to grow.
