In 1838, the town was officially incorporated. The first division of the Reading and Columbia Railroad was completed in 1862 when the first railroad train came to Manheim. Water pipes were laid in 1884, and service came from the Manheim Electric Company, encouraging more settlers to move to the town. The electric utility had a plant in the city, providing residents with more job opportunities. More and more people began moving to the town and establishing homes, but the town has remained relatively small. As of 2013, the town's population was just under 5,000 people.
