Eden Prairie was a town that grew slowly. Native Americas were the first to inhabit the land, and it was part of the Great Dakota Nation. Different tribes began to argue over the land, and many battles were fought in the mid-1800s. A treaty happened in 1851 that opened up land that was west of the Mississippi River to pioneers wishing to settle. The Cummins family was a notable group of people who settled and tried to learn how to farm the land. In 1862, the "Sioux Uprising" occurred, during which most of the Dakota tribe were removed from the state.
The first meeting for the city was held on May 11, 1858, when Minnesota officially became a state. The farming community started to thrive, and more families and pioneers came to settle in the town. The first airport was built in the area in 1946, named Flying Cloud Airport, which signified the growth of the area. The city recreation system and parks began to expand in the 1960s to further encourage families to move there. Interstate 494 was built in the 1970s, making the town much more accessible to people passing by. In 1974, Eden Prairie became a statutory city.
Best Time to Visit Eden Prairie, MN
The best time to visit Eden Prairie is in the summer from June to August. The temperature is warm and usually in the 80s, making it the perfect time to go jump in the lakes. Farmers markets are everywhere as locals present their summer harvest to purchase. While there are occasional thunderstorms, it's generally a warm and sunny time with high humidity. Hotel rooms should be booked in advanced due to the crowds. The Minnesota State Fair occurs at the end of the summer, causing many cities in the state to suddenly swell with tourists and locals going to the fair.
While temperatures drop below freezing in the winter, it's a great time to get cheap hotel rates. The tourists of the summer and fall are long gone, making it much easier to get around town. A fun activity to do is to visit the Ice Castles. Huge "castle" structures are created out of ice, which you can walk by and admire. Some of them even let you go inside to feel like you're in a different world in a house made completely out of ice. If you're a skier, check out the Hyland Hills Ski Area's nine different runs.
