First established in 1873 along the ever-expanding railroad, the village is named for Benzen, Germany. Many of Bensenville's founding settlers were German farmers who would travel into Chicago to sell their dairy products. Eventually, other immigrants from Mexico and Eastern Europe were drawn to the newly prosperous town.
After World War II, the town turned more to industrial pursuits when the City of Chicago purchased the Army Air Corps plant at Orchard Field. The site was converted into a commercial airport and named for WWII fighter pilot Edward O'Hare. This event brought a lot of opportunity to the area back then and still does today. Many metal, sign, equipment, and machining companies are still located in Bensenville.
