Batavia was surveyed in 1788, but it didn't welcome residents until Virginia's Ezekiel Dimmitt moved to town in 1797. Development was slow, though, and it took until 1814 for the area to be officially planned. George Ely purchased Captain Francis Minnis' initial survey and took charge, naming the community Batavia, perhaps after the New York city. Ten years later, Batavia became the new seat of Clermont County, taking the title from New Richmond. In 1842, Batavia was officially incorporated as a village in its own right.
