Pokagon State Park is located just 5 miles north of Angola and is one of the area's biggest attractions. The park was named after 19th century Potawatomi chief Leopold Pokagon and his son Simon Pokagon. Pokagon is said to mean "the rib," which refers to the protective shield around important organs in the body. Both Chief Pokagon and his son earned reputations as potent "shields" and advocates for their people, the Potawatomi. The tribe remains tied to Northern Indiana to this day.
