Among those miners was a man named Samuel Clemens, who would later take the pen name Mark Twain. The man who would become one of America's greatest literary lights had come to California in 1865 after seeking his fortune during the great California Gold Rush. Mark Twain immortalized Calaveras County in his short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," a story based on a tale he had overheard at the Angels Hotel in Angels Camp. This significant history led the state of California to name the entire city of Angels Camp a historical landmark.
The first official Calaveras Jumping Frog Jubilee took place in 1928 on Main Street Angels Camp. This is how Angels Camp earned the dubious nickname of Frogtown, though over the course of its history, the city has also been known as City of Angels, Angels City, Clearlake, and its first name, Carson's Creek. The city was officially rechristened during the Gold Rush boom days of the 1850s.
Every year Angels Camp commemorates its unusual place in American literary history with a Frog Jubilee, which takes over historic Angels Camp Main Street. Come for the frog races, and while you are there, enjoy tasty dining, artisanal shopping, and historic reenactments of all kinds.
You can also visit the Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House any time to survey over 30,000 square feet of Gold Rush-era exhibits. You can check out genuine apothecary items in a 19th century doctor's office, visit the Mark Twain Exhibit, and exhibits about ranching and gold panning. The best way to learn about gold panning, though, is to try it with your own hands during your visit to Angels Camp. For a more leisurely historic experience, take the city's free walking tour.
It's not all jumping frogs and gold panning in Angels Camp. Many people come visit for the beautiful scenery at New Melones Lake, one of California's largest reservoirs. Bring your own boat and dock at the full-service marina, or pack your bike and prepare to conquer miles of challenging mountain biking trails. It's also a favorite fishing spot and hiking destination.
Golfers also journey to Angels Camp for the incredible championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course offers challenge and fun for golfers of all levels, not to mention incredible views. If you need any supplies to help perfect your game, stop into the pro shop. You can also wind down after a great game with a visit to The Cellar Room, where you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying views of the course and the rolling hills beyond.
Whether you come to watch the fierce frog competition, want to dig into the past, or simply enjoy the beautiful landscape and outdoor recreation opportunities, you are sure to enjoy a memorable visit to Angels Camp.
