The town of Firestone, first incorporated in 1908, was named after wealthy Ohio investor Jacob H. Firestone. The town was originally established to provide support for the miners who worked in the area's coal industry. It was purchased by the Denslow Coal and Land Company, and the 160-acre area became home to the Firestone coal mine and Firestone Coal Company.
Coal was first discovered by brothers Thomas, John, and William McKissick, who were members of the home guard, tasked with protecting settlers from attacks by Native American tribes.
It was 1872 when the brothers made their first coal discovery and they established McKissick Mine in short order. The former site of the mine is now home to Saddleback Golf Course. Upon the deaths of the McKissick brothers, Denslow Coal and Land purchased the area from the final surviving widow.
The coal mines remained at the heart of the city until 1947 when they all closed. In the end, the mine produced well over two million tons of coal. The railroad line that used to transport the coal has now been removed and converted to the Firestone Trail running from Settler's Park to Coronado Park.
The town remained small until the early 2000s when it again saw a boon and became one of the fastest growing cities in Colorado.
Firestone, located just on the edge of the Denver-Boulder metro area, is now known as a popular spot for tourists from around the country who are looking to enjoy the area's sprawling spaces, recreation opportunities, and the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. It also attracts many new residents due to its booming economy and safety.
