Established in 1817 by Zadok Casey, Mount Vernon, Illinois, boasts a rich past rooted in its strategic location and notable residents. Named after George Washington's plantation, the town initially had no roads leading to it, with travelers navigating through swamps or high ground to reach it. However, constructing a bridge over Casey Creek in 1820–1821 and establishing Vandalia Road in 1823 put Mount Vernon on the map as an essential stop on the west road. The town also played a significant role in the legal history of Illinois, with the Illinois Supreme Court's first Grand Division being relocated to Mount Vernon in 1848. This location was a gathering place for prominent lawyers, including Abraham Lincoln. Mount Vernon faced adversity in 1888 when a devastating tornado destroyed over 450 houses and killed 37 people. The American Red Cross, led by Clara Barton, provided relief efforts, and the destination was eventually rebuilt. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, Mount Vernon became a hub for railroad car manufacturing, and, during World War II, part of its industry switched to wartime production. Today, the National Railway Equipment Company operates in the area, rebuilding and servicing diesel-electric locomotives for rail lines worldwide. From its humble beginnings to its modern-day status as a transportation and manufacturing center, Mount Vernon continues to be a vital part of Illinois' history.
