The Middletown center is approximately the area of Prescott Farm and 1 mile northwest of Newport State Airport.
The best time to head to Middletown is during the summer between June and August, when the weather is comfortable and mild. During this season, the average high is about 76 degrees, while the low drops to around 62 degrees. Beachgoers flock to the town around this time, although the water is still a bit chilly. In addition, the farmers' market, fish market, flea market, and vineyards are all in full swing. You may want to consider booking a hotel early around this time, as prices jump and hotels tend to fill up faster than in any other season.
While you may not want to swim, the fall and the spring are two other exquisite times to visit Middletown. Temperatures stay relatively comfortable, although precipitation picks up during these seasons. Around these seasons, you can see the foliage change colors or begin rebirth, and maritime wildlife sightings aren't uncommon. There's also a chance you can get a decent deal on hotel rooms, as many locals head back to their jobs on the mainland.
If you're looking for a steal on hotel rooms, go to Middletown in the winter, but remember that temperatures can get downright freezing. Nevertheless, there's still plenty to do. If you want to stay indoors, the town has plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants to keep you occupied during the duration of your visit. Second Beach offers some rougher waters that are perfect for body surfing or boogie boarding. You can also tackle the waves on a swim or just hang out to work on your tan. The more secluded Third Beach is the ideal choice for those that want to escape the crowds or want calmer waters. With the relaxed water, this beach is great for families with young children.
If you just want to sip a glass of wine and enjoy time with that special someone, Middletown is close to two wonderful, local vineyards. At the Newport Vineyards, you can have your choice of one of their delicious wines, including dessert wines, pinot noir, pinot grigio, or even a blush.
