The village of Matteson was settled by German immigrants at the intersection of two new railroads, the Illinois Central Railroad and the New York Central Railroad. The village was named after the state's governor at the time, Joel A. Matteson. The 1880 census shows Matteson's population as being 500 residents. The small village offered two saloons and boarding houses, two general stores, two hotels, and two harness shops, as well as a shoe shop, blacksmith, and wagon/implement shop. Matteson was incorporated in 1889, and by 1950, the population had more than doubled to 1,211.That population nearly tripled over the next decade as new homes were built, with the 1960 census showing that Matteson was home to 3,225 people. The village annexed over 1,000 acres during the 60s and 70s, and by 1990, the population had exploded to include over 11,000 residents. That population has continued to rise since then.
Although Old Matteson still feels a little like a traditional village, thanks in part to the establishment of a village commons that includes a village hall and a bridge over Interstate 57, you won't be without modern conveniences. If you love small-town vibes, check out Main Street and the railroad area. Otherwise, head to the Lincoln Mall or the village's other two shopping centers for all of the retail and dining options you could want.
