Opelousas is not only the Zydeco Music Capital of the World but also a hub for festivals celebrating the rich Creole culture and music. The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival, born out of a concern for preserving Creole and zydeco music in 1981, has become one of the largest Zydeco celebrations. Today, it brings together the finest performers in the genre, offering a lively mix of swamp-pop, swing, R&B, and southern soul that will have everyone dancing. Attendees can start their day with the Bloody Mary Zydeco Breakfast and spend the rest of the day enjoying a lineup of South Louisiana's most popular Zydeco musicians. Authentic plate lunches and Creole cuisine are available to fuel the fun and dancing. Another highlight is the Holy Ghost Creole Festival. This annual November event starts with delicious fried catfish on Friday and leads into a weekend filled with gospel hymns, live music, and iconic Creole dishes like backbone stew and barbeque pork steak. Participants can join the 5k run or 1-mile fun walk on Saturday, then indulge in pies, boudin, cracklins, and the festival's renowned sweet dough pies, a delicacy prepared by dedicated Holy Ghost volunteers. The event culminates on Sunday with the Creole Festival Parade, a colorful display of local pride along Landry to Union Street, where visitors are welcome to join the community in celebration. Opelousas also hosts other annual events, such as the Annual Gumbo Cook-off in January, the Christmas Lighting of Le Vieux Village on the first Friday of December, and the Opelousas Imperial Mardi Gras Parade. With such a rich calendar of festivities, Opelousas invites visitors to immerse themselves in the core of Cajun and Creole tradition, music, and gastronomy.
