Addison and Mary Owen Litton and other settlers arrived in the area in 1832, building around where Old San Antonio Road crossed Cedar Creek. In 1837, the area later benefited from a road that went from Austin to the Gulf of Mexico, crossing Bastrop County near the Cedar Creek. A Methodist church, added in 1842, became a vital part of the community and between 1849 and 1852, and was followed by a Presbyterian church, the first school, and the first post office. A teacher-training school opened in 1883.
The population of Cedar Creek dropped to 250 by the late 1880s. With oil being part of the local economy from the 1910s through the 1940s, the population rose to 300 but later fell to 200.
