Welcome to Johannesburg
Situated in the northeastern part of South Africa, Johannesburg is a dynamic, vibrant city that continues to gain ground on the international travel radar. More than 752,000 people live throughout the city, making it the largest in the country. The city is split into a total of five districts: Central Johannesburg, Soweto, Sandton, Randburg, and Roodepoort. While English is the main language spoken around the city, visitors can expect to hear various African dialects. A big draw is the weather, known to be pristine year-round.
Johannesburg is South Africa's economic hub, so it's no surprise it's a busy destination for business travelers. When commuting in the city, make sure to avoid areas known for high levels of crime. There are plenty of ways to enjoy a safe vacation, as long as visitors are aware of their surroundings and stay out of dangerous neighborhoods. To navigate Johannesburg's five districts, it's best for travelers to rent cars. This way, they can steer clear of crime-ridden parts of town. A public transit system does stretch throughout the greater Jo'burg city covering 108 routes, but it is recommended visitors try to avoid taking it due to the prevalence of crime. With that being said, Gautrain, Africa's first modern rapid rail, is fast and efficient way to commute between nearby towns.
