Punta Gorda means “Fat Point,” and its name has been on local maps since 1851. Settlers arrived in the area of present-day Punta Gorda during the late 1800s. Union Army veterans Frederick and Jarvis Howard homesteaded an area near Punta Gorda about 10 years after the Civil War. By 1879, a railroad charter was established at nearby Lake City and Charlotte Harbor, Florida. In 1887, the first settlers began incorporation talks and the city was dubbed Punta Gorda after the first mayoral election.
Punta Gorda continued to grow after official incorporation. A U.S. Army airfield was constructed during World War II to help train combat air pilots. Entrepreneurs created canal-front home sites in 1959, which led to an intense growth spurt. By the 1980s, a new shopping, marina, and restaurant complex called Fisherman's Village was built, and it continues to be one of the area's best attractions.
Today, Punta Gorda has bounced back from damages from 2004's Hurricane Charley. Its historic downtown and waterfront have been revitalized, and many sites are designated on the National Register of Historic Places.
Whatever your reasons for visiting Punta Gorda, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
When should you visit Punta Gorda, FL?
The best time to visit Punta Gorda and Florida's west coast in general is from March through the end of May. Spring provides comfortably hot temperatures that are suitable for outdoor adventures and festivals. Check out the Punta Gorda Spring Arts and Crafts Show, The Hibiscus Festival, the Muscle Car City Monthly Car Show, or the popular Spring Bash. Keep in mind that hotel rates tend to be high during spring, especially during key events, so plan your trip several weeks in advance to get the best deals.
Hurricane season runs from June to November, but don't let the threat of storms and elevated temperatures dissuade you from experiencing Punta Gorda in the summer. Check out the city's Annual 4th of July Celebration at Fisherman's Village. You'll also love the monthly Alive After Five event in downtown, which is held every third Thursday of the month and features live musicians, food trucks, artist demos, and other forms of entertainment.
Temperatures fluctuate between the low 50s and high 70s during Punta Gorda's winter months. While it may be too chilly for a dip in the Gulf, you can still take a cruise on Charlotte Harbor. Fun trolley tours start operating in January and only run until April due to the excessive summer heat, so there's plenty to experience. If you're here in November or December, be sure to visit the Festival of Lights in Fisherman's Village.
