The Suquamish people were the first inhabitants of the Poulsbo area, at the north end of Liberty Bay. There were several Native names for the region including tcu-tcu-lats, which means ”place of the maples."The Tsunamis tribe was forcefully relocated to the Port Madison Indian Reservation after the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. White settlers took the land and the town of Poulsbo was founded by Norwegian immigrant Jørgen Eliason in the 1880s. For many decades, mainly Norwegian and other Scandinavian immigrants inhabited the area. An early Norwegian settler I.B. Moe suggested the town be named Paulsbo after a village in Halden, Norway. However, authorities in Washington, D.C., when authorizing a post office, misspelled the name as Poulsbo, creating the name of the town. The city was incorporated on Dec. 18, 1907. Fishing and gathering oysters were major industries in the town's early years, reflecting the area's Norwegian and Scandinavian heritage.
