The Poughkeepsie center point is about the area of Vassar Brothers Medical Center and 1 mile southeast of Poughkeepsie Amtrak.
In order to enjoy ideal weather conditions mixed with natural beauty, the best time to visit the area is between May and July. Due to its northern location, tourism in the area is relatively slow in the spring. If you don't mind some chilly temperatures, spring is a great time to explore the city while getting good deals on hotels and attractions. Summer sees the crowds pick up as the temperatures begin to rise. The prices for hotels and attractions tend to increase during the peak of the tourism season from June through August.
If you are traveling for the colors of fall, Poughkeepsie is a fantastic location to see the leaves change. Fall temperatures in the area are still comfortable during the day. However, if you are going out at night, a jacket is recommended as the overnight lows begin to dip. Tourists drawn by the natural beauty of fall keep the prices slightly higher.
Winter is downright brutal at times in Poughkeepsie. Typically, the area sees significant amounts of snow at least once a season. The high temperatures don't usually get out of the low 40s. If you enjoy colder temperatures and smaller crowds, this is an excellent time to visit. Just make sure you remain weather aware at all times.

Poughkeepsie has several things to do for everyone in the family. One of the most well-known tourist attractions in Poughkeepsie is the Walkway Over The Hudson. It is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. Before enjoying the breathtaking beauty of this site, make sure you have proper shoes. The park opens at 7 a.m. and closes at sunset year-round. If there are high winds or lightning in the area, the bridge is closed for safety reasons. The 18-hole course was first opened in 1972 and then updated in 2001 by Stephen Kay. Metal spikes are not allowed on the course. There are rental clubs available if you need them. The city of Poughkeepsie offers a naturally beautiful escape from stress. It is large enough to enjoy but small enough to make you forget the big city life for a while. Located in the mountains, it is perfect for cold weather travelers. It is also close enough to the United States Military Academy to make it a home base for sports or other events. A mix of culture, beauty, and relaxation await you but don't forget to pack for the weather and bring good walking shoes.

I was in town for a memorial service in nearby Beacon. Poughkeepsie is well organized with the streets in a logical grid. The signage is helpful in finding where I was and where I needed to be.

Typical city of it's size. Center is well maintained, back sections run down slummy.
Enjoyed my visit and noticed a lot of progressive changes within the city.
Poughkeepsie is a quiet town with not too many things to do. However, if someone looks closely, there are a few good activities for hikers and nature lovers. The walkway over the Hudson, mount beacon hikes, etc are worth doing for any visitor.
