The Vancouver center is approximately the area of Downtown Vancouver.
Summer is the best time to enjoy the hiking, camping, and outdoor recreation options that surround Vancouver, but you'll need to make reservations early if you're coming during the peak travel months between June and August. Booking several months in advance is a good idea, especially if you're staying over a holiday weekend.
From October until May, hotel rates are lower and rooms are easier to book at the last minute, but you'll need to bring good rain gear and warm layers if you plan to adventure outdoors. Vancouver doesn't get as cold as much of the northern U.S. in winter, but temperatures can dip below freezing. Still, if you're coming for the history, the scenery, the food, or winter sports at nearby Mount Hood, you can score some great deals in the winter.
You can save a bundle if you know how to hunt down bargains. The Comfort Inn & Suites Downtown Vancouver, Heathman Lodge, and Residence Inn by Marriott North Portland/Vancouver, for instance, all honor AAA and AARP members with discounts. The Quality Inn And Suites Vancouver also offers AAA and AARP discounts, and offers special rates to military and government employees as well. Also, watch for double points packages at Homewood Suites by Hilton Vancouver-Portland and the Hilton Vancouver Washington.
If you want to get the best rates at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites Vancouver Mall, be sure to plan ahead; the hotel offers both a “Book Early N Save” rate and an “Advance Purchase Saver” rate.
Looking for reliable comfort at a great price? Vancouver won't let you down. The town boasts a wide variety of great hotels at value prices. The Hilton Vancouver Washington is a popular option for business travelers that offers an indoor pool, clean comfortable rooms, efficient staff, and a terrific riverside location.
For extended stays, the Staybridge Suites Vancouver-Portland Metro has you covered with well- stocked kitchenettes with full-size refrigerators and other homestyle amenities to help you feel settled. The Staybridge Suites is known for great service, super clean rooms, and tasty hot breakfasts.
At The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Vancouver Mall, you can choose from a whole menu of options, from simple rooms to king suites, with or without breakfast. It's a clean, reliable property with a pool, gym, and jacuzzi to keep you top shape while you travel.
Heathman Lodge serves up genuine Pacific Northwest flavor, with wood beams, decks that face the great outdoors, a restaurant that offers fresh seafood and other local ingredients. The Heathman offers peace and serenity in a rustic, elegant setting for a reasonable price.
The Best Western Plus Vancouver Mall Drive Hotel and Suites is another solid choice for value. It's a very basic hotel, with an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, and a fitness center that reliably offers a clean, comfortable space, a hearty breakfast, and good service. Wifi and coffee makers are standard in the rooms.
Vancouver is a charming spot to experience the history and nature of the region, and most visitors spend their free time hiking in the gorge or visiting nearby attractions like Mt. St. Helens, the Ape Caves and Mount Hood. But you'd be making a mistake if you didn't allow some time to explore the local restaurant scene.
The Asian cuisines in the Pacific Northwest are highly evolved, thanks to a large immigrant population. Sushi World is where Vancouver locals gather to enjoy fresh sushi at rock bottom prices. Expect a crowd; it's a great spot for people watching.
Sakura of Japan is a more upscale option for Japanese cuisine, where the chefs prepare the food table side for your entertainment. The service and food are both reliably good at Sakura.
If you prefer Thai food, try Thai Lotus, a family-owned restaurant that serves lunch and dinner seven days a week.
Not all the cuisine in Vancouver is Asian. Foodies flock to Roots Restaurant and Bar to try the fresh, seasonal treats that pour from the open kitchen onto the indoor and outdoor tables. Roots has been recognized by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the most romantic spots in the country to cozy up for a winter dinner.
Of course, Vancouver also offers casual fare for outdoorsy types who've been working up an appetite on the trails all day. Burgerville, a local fast food chain, got its start right here in Vancouver. The original location is gone, but the one on E. Mill Plain Blvd sits right next door to it. Be sure to try the sweet potato fries.
Pizza lovers should stop by Vancouver Pizza Company on Main Street and try one of more than 25 gourmet and specialty pizzas, with a salad and hot breadsticks.

We were there for a doctor appointment with a neurosurgeon. We didn't get to see much of Vancouver. On our walk near the hotel, we enjoyed some beautiful sculptures and interesting shop windows. I noticed a sense of community pride in Vancouver. The big park on Mill Plain is gorgeous.
