Long Beach was originally founded in 1880 upon the construction of the first Long Beach Hotel. Its popularity as a vacation spot began to grow with the completion of a railroad line extension to the city shortly thereafter. Today, Long Beach is one of only two cities on Long Beach Barrier Island. Although it technically lies within the boundaries of the Town of Hempstead, Long Beach is independently governed by an elected five-member City Council and an appointed City Manager.
What time of year is best to visit Long Beach, NY?
Thanks to its oceanfront location along the south shore of Long Island, Long Beach experiences milder temperatures than other other cities in the area. In fact, temperatures in Long Beach average 10 degrees warmer in winter and 10 degrees cooler in summer than NYC's inland communities.
During spring, Long Beach can be chilly, with highs ranging anywhere from 45 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a slow season in terms of tourism, which means you can find great deals during these months. During the fall, temperatures are slightly higher than those in the spring. Unfortunately, this season is also the second-busiest time for tourism.
For ideal weather during your stay, plan to visit in May, June, late-August, September, or October. Of course, the warmest months of the year will be July and August. However, these months, along with September, are also particularly busy from a tourism standpoint, so you'll have to deal with larger crowds and higher prices. If you plan to visit during peak tourism season, be sure to book your hotel and flight well ahead of time to secure the best deals.
If you're dreaming of a white Christmas, you should know that Long Beach typically experiences snow during late December. This also happens to be the least popular month for tourists to visit the city, which means those willing to brave snowy weather and cold temperatures will enjoy lower hotel rates.
