In Chicago, the culinary cup runneth over, spilling into the North Shore, where you'll find the famous Restaurant Row in Wheeling. This stretch of Milwaukee Avenue has been a dining hotspot since the early 1970s, offering a mix of fast-casual to fine dining options. Restaurant Row's story began with Chef Jean Banchet, who opened Le Francais in the 1970s. His restaurant quickly became a sensation, attracting diners willing to wait up to six months for a reservation. This early success turned Milwaukee Avenue into a culinary destination. Following Banchet's lead, Bob Chinn and his daughter Marilyn opened Bob Chinn's Crab House in 1982 at 333 S. Milwaukee Avenue. This restaurant became another cornerstone of Restaurant Row, known for its diverse menu options, including crabmeat vermicelli, aged steaks, and the world-famous Mai Tai and garlic rolls. After the success of Le Francais and Bob Chinn's Crab House, many other dining options flocked to Wheeling, bringing a taste of Chicago's best with them. One of the most notable is Superdawg Drive-In, which opened its second location on Restaurant Row in 2010. This fast-casual spot offers a nostalgic dining experience with carhops delivering food directly to your vehicle. Superdawg is famous for its larger-than-life Chicago-style hot dogs, made with a special recipe that includes extra smokiness, garlic, and spices. The restaurant also peels and cuts 5,000 pounds of potatoes daily to make their fresh fries. Restaurant Row in Wheeling is a must-visit for food lovers. Its rich history and diverse dining options offer a unique culinary adventure just a short drive from downtown Chicago. Whether you're in the mood for a gourmet meal or a classic Chicago hot dog, Restaurant Row has something to satisfy every palate.
