Westampton Township was formed from Northampton Township by an Act of Assembly on March 6, 1850, named for its location as the "western" part of Northampton. In 1854, a section was added from Pemberton Township, and in 1880, Eastampton Township was created from Westampton. The township reached its current size in 1956 when Willingboro Township transferred the rest of Rancocas Village to Westampton. The first inhabitants were the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware Indians), followed by Quaker settlers in 1677. Rancocas Village developed around the Rancocas Friends Meeting House, built in 1772, and includes 101 homes in a historic district. Timbuctoo, a hamlet settled by free blacks and formerly enslaved people starting in 1826, was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Peachfield Plantation, built in 1725, is a pre-Revolutionary War site. Early education included the Rancocas Friends School, founded in 1807, and two Civil War-era schools, with the Westampton School opening in 1955.
