The Vaughan-Smitherman Museum is also worth a visit during a trip to Selma. The building was built in 1874 by the Selma Masonic Order as a university building. It was later used as a hospital for the Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. During the history of the building, it also served as a courthouse and a military school. Now the museum houses Civil War memorabilia and documents, and a collection of artifacts that were manufactured at the Confederate Naval Foundry and then thrown into the river when General Wilson was captured at Fort Selma at the end of the Civil War.
If you are visiting Selma during the month of March, head to the Jubilee Bridge to experience a historical reenactment that takes place each year along the bridge. The bridge is where the original Selma to Montgomery march began back in the 1960s. You cannot visit Selma without crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. There are also several museums dedicated to the history of this city. A memorable experience for sure.
